Choosing Funeral Advisors, Directors, and Family Counselors

Our Pre-Screened and Qualified™ Criteria


Funeral Advisor/Director/Counselor Requirements:

  1. Obtain a Mortuary Science Degree
  2. Pass the Mortuary Science National Board Test
  3. *Pass their State Examination
  4. *Required to work through an internship
  5. *Must hold either a Bachelors Degree, Associates Degree, or High School Diploma
  6. *Maintain proper registration, licensing, and continuing education
  7. Always adhere to the rules, regulations, and requirements of the FTC, OSHA, and their resident state
  8. Maintain and active membership in good standing with either the National Funeral Directors Association (www.NFDA.org) or the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (www.ICCFA.com)

Funeral Advisor/Director/Counselor Responsibilities:

  1. Consult with the family
  2. Work through arrangements with the next of kin or responsible party
  3. Help coordinate appropriate merchandise
  4. Embalm the body
  5. Cremate the remains
  6. Perform restorative art and cosmetics
  7. Present Cemetery or Graveside Burial Service
  8. Conduct the funeral service

Each Funeral Advisor who is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association (www.nfda.com) is required to adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct which is designed to address the obligations of the funeral professional in five key areas:

  1. Obligations to the Family
  2. Obligations for the Care of the Decedent
  3. Obligations to the Public
  4. Obligations to the Government
  5. Obligations to the NFDA

Each Funeral Advisor who is a member of the International Association of Cemetery, Cremation, and Funeral Association (www.iccfa.com) is required to adhere to the following “Obligations of Membership” by pledging the following:

  1. To care for the remains of those entrusted to us with dignity, respect, and professional skill, whether at a funeral home, crematory or cemetery.
  2. To honor the wishes of the deceased and their family and to serve all families with respect, understanding and confidentiality.
  3. To administer and safeguard all advance planning and permanent memorialization funds for their lawful and intended purpose.
  4. To protect and preserve all interment sites and relevant historical data entrusted to us.
  5. To be guided by the spirit and letter of all applicable laws and regulations set by governing bodies with jurisdiction over our activities in the ownership, management and operation of a funeral home, crematory, cemetery or related endeavor.

Also, the large majority of our Funeral Advisors who are “Pre-Screened and Qualified™” have obtained additional training and education designed to hold them to an even higher standard, above and beyond those standards required by law. This additional training and educations includes:

  • Leadership training
  • Professional Development
  • Safety training
  • Regulatory Compliance
