Caskets and Burial Shrouds

Caskets are available in a broad variety of styles and materials, and can be made from wood, fiberglass, steel, copper, bronze, plastic, as nicely as biodegradable materials. Caskets are typically one of the most high priced funeral products, ranging from $1,500 to $10,000.

Wood and Metal Caskets Costs

Wood caskets range from simple plain-pine-boxes to ornate old growth rainforest mahogany. Metal caskets vary from 18 guage steel to copper and bronze.

Metal caskets range from $1,000 to $12,000.

However, the National Funeral Director’s Association’s 2006 survey reported that the average price for a metal casket purchased from a funeral home was $2,255.

Cardboard or Fiberboard Caskets Costs

A cardboard casket is the absolute least expensive option.  Some cardboard/fiberboard caskets are made to resemble wood.  Others are plain cardboard that can be personalized by the family with drawings, messages and pictures attached to the outside of the casket to create a more personal memorial. Cardboard caskets range from $50 to $500.

Burial Shroud Costs

Burial shrouds have been used for burials for thousands of years. Traditionally, they are a long length of fabric that is wrapped around the body. A number of companies are now creating burial shrouds to be used for green burials. These shrouds will often contain a series of fabric handles for three or four people to use to move the body. Burial shrouds range in price from $195 to $1,000.
